Tecmo Bowl

The conversation was edited to improve the clarity of it and its length.

What does it mean for you to be an athlete who covers the sport, 35 years after the start of your career?

The idea was in the planning on and off for a long time. The timing had to be just right for my brand. It was working with the Madden team to smooth things out, make sure to cross all the i's, dot all the t'swhen we had that completed, the rest was just going to be a breeze. I realized that somewhere in my life I had done something right so that I could be regarded as one of the most famous athletes of more than thirty years ago. Madden is still thinking enough of me to do things like this.

The legacy of your video game goes back to 1989, when you were the mainstay of Tecmo Bowl. Was it a thrill to see yourself in the past?

I can still picture myself in Tecmo Bowl. I still have that video game. I still have the device that I can play the game on. It's just in a box that's in storage. It's iconic. It really makes me happy to hear grown men in their 40s telling me"Hey, my cousin and I were involved in the most intense battle of our lives because we each wanted to be in the Tecmo Bowl when we were young. Our parents saw us fighting in the game, and my dad put it in his tool cabinet. It was not playable for a whole month since the fighting was so intense. I hear this often. At exhibitions of sports memorabilia, people are able to come up with the video game. They tell me, 'I've have the game machine I played it on. My kids play it. My grandkids and I play it ... as does everyone continues to argue about who is going to become Bo Jackson.' Tecmo Bowl ... that was quite a bit of technology in the past. When you look at it today and think, 'Wow it's an old-fashioned.'

Are you sure that you've not been a participant in Tecmo Bowl?

I've not played Tecmo Bowl. This is the truth from God. I've watched others playing it quite a bit. However, I was able to figure out what I could do. I was aware of that the Tecmo Bowl man could do. It is a pleasure for me to hear people praise me on that day's game.

A part of your video game return to Madden is celebrating Nike's legendary Bo Knows campaign. Let us go back to the beginning. What was the way Bo Knows presented the concept that Bo Knows was the name of Bo Knows to you?

We discovered Bo Knows accidentally. Writers, directors, sketchers We were sat in a circle, looking over storyboards to shoot our next project. We decided to trim the length because it seemed slightly too long. Everyone was offering their opinions about this or that. I was thinking, "Why don't we try this? ... What's the reason? Why do we not move this to the other side, then put it together, and then cut it down to 5 or 6 minutes?' Then they glanced at me , and they said "Wow. It's likely to be a good idea. Someone across the table glanced at me , and replied "Bo Knows!' and it stuck. No one sat down and thought about it or stayed up late contemplating that catchy phrase. It was just a matter of sitting around the table discussing shootings.

Before you had an iconic shoe that was that was the Nike Air Bo Turf, in 1990, you starred in with the Nike Air Trainer 3, that became known as your shoe. What are your memories about your experience with the Air Trainer 3?

Let me explain it in this way. In 1969 when I was in the first grade of my life in rural Alabama in the winter months, it was in 30s in the outside. And I was required to attend school in barefoot. Shoes were not allowed. I'm not writing this to gain sentimental reasons or to tell a sad story. However, I do remember my brother being a block away from my home. I'm standing at the front door. The sister I was with stood just a blocks away from me,, and the other one was waiting at the stop for buses. My sister who was at the bus stop spotted the bus crest the hill just a few miles away from her, she'd shout at my sister. She would shout to my brother, and then my brother would shout at me. I would then walk out of the door in barefoot. When my brother reached my sister's house I'd have caught him earlier. When we finally got at the stop for buses, I was 15 to 20 yards ahead of my sister and brother. From attending school in bare feet in the winter of '69 to becoming a teenager and wearing an athletic shoe that was inspired by my own ... It was fortunate.

After about 30 odd years, people continue to brag about the shoe and even collect the shoe. Recently I had a friend from mine Anthony Anderson, the comedian, texted me: 'Hey, Bo! I'm performing a show on my shoes. I'm unable to locate the Air trainers you have. I'm in need that you have!' It happened that I had a pair at my desk. I thought, 'Hey, I have an item here. I'll just mail the pair to you. It's times like those when I just sit in my chair and think, 'Wow!'
